The riskiest moment in any modernization project is the cutover. A phased approach — routing traffic incrementally from the legacy system to its replacement, service by service — turns one high-stakes event into many low-stakes ones.
This only works if the new services are observable from day one: structured logging and tracing need to exist before the first real traffic hits them, not added after something breaks.
